Diamonds are forever, but plastic - while not as sparkly - lasts nearly as long. In fact, most plastics persist for hundreds to thousands of years without much change. This durability may be appealing if you want to leave clues for future archaeologists. But on a global sustainability level, plastic is one of the bad guys. (Feldman, 2008)

This resistance to natural biodegradation processes of plastics leads to an accumulation of plastics in landfills. Many items end up in the marine environment, where they drift, become entangled, and often litter beaches. Plastic bottles are a major contributor, followed by plastic bags, fishing line, and other plastic pieces.

With this matter, plastics now end up as a very serious problem as it causes many challenges like Global Warming, etc. The only way in solving this is to educate the children for our future, for them to know he things that they should do when time comes. But nowadays, people should also find a way to solve this issue, so the proponents of this research put up a study on how to utilize sweet potato in the degradation of plastics.

In Los Angeles County 38,000 tons of trash are thrown away each day. Mainly due to recycling, and partly due to the economic recession, this amount is down from the 50,000 tons per day rate of the late 1980s. If all those garbage trucks for one day lined up from bumper-to-bumper, they would form a convoy 13 miles long.
Incineration — burning everything down to ashes, is how the world deals with much of its waste. It’s dirty and a serious health risk, but profitable for waste companies with little conscience. So which country first took the brave step of banning incineration? The answer might surprise you: the Philippines. Lynne Malcolm meets the community organisations and local politicians who passionately campaigned for the historic ban and environmental reform of waste management policy.

The sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is a dicotyledonous plant which belongs to the family Convolvulaceae. Amongst the approximately 50 genera and more than 1000 species of this family, only I. batatas is a crop plant whose large, starchy, sweet tasting tuberous roots are an important root vegetable (Purseglove, 1991; Woolfe, 1992). The young leaves and shoots are sometimes eaten as greens. The sweet potato is only distantly related to the potato (Solanum tuberosum). It is commonly called a yam in parts of North America, although they are only very distantly related to the other plant widely known as yams) (in the Dioscoreaceae family), which is native to Africa and Asia.

The genus Ipomoea that contains the sweet potato also includes several garden flowers called morning glories, though that term is not usually extended to Ipomoea batatas. Some cultivars of Ipomoea batatas are grown as ornamental plants.

This plant is a herbaceous perennial vine, bearing alternate heart-shaped or palmately lobed leaves and medium-sized sympetalous flowers. The edible tuberous root is long and tapered, with a smooth skin whose color ranges between red, purple, brown and white. Its flesh ranges from white through yellow, orange, and purple.

Sweet potatoes are native to the tropical parts of the South America, and were domesticated there at least 5000 years ago.[1] They spread very early throughout the region, including the Caribbean. They were also known before western exploration in Polynesia. How exactly they arrived there is a subject of ongoing research and discussion of various hypotheses involving archaeological, linguistic and genetic evidence.

Austin (1988) postulated that the centre of origin of I. batatas was between the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico and the mouth of the Orinoco River in Venezuela. The 'cultigen' had mostly likely been spread by local people to South America by 2500 BC. Zhang et al. (1998) provided strong supporting evidence that the geographical zone postulated by Austin is the primary centre of diversity. The much lower molecular diversity found in Peru-Ecuador suggests that this region be considered as secondary centre of sweet potato diversity.

The cassava, yuca, manioc, or mandioca (Manihot esculenta) is a woody shrub of the Euphorbiaceae (spurge family) native to South America that is extensively cultivated as an annual crop in tropical and subtropical regions for its edible starchy tuberous root, a major source of carbohydrates. Cassava is the third largest source of carbohydrates for human food in the world, with Africa its largest center of production.

In chemistry, glycosides are certain molecules in which a sugar part is bound to some other part. Glycosides play numerous important roles in living organisms. Many plants store important chemicals in the form of inactive glycosides; if these chemicals are needed, the glycosides are brought in contact with water and an enzyme, and the sugar part is broken off, making the chemical available for use. Many such plant glycosides are used as medications. In animals (including humans), poisons are often bound to sugar molecules in order to remove them from the body.

Oleander (Nerium indicum), is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the dogbane family Apocynaceae. It is the only species currently classified in the genus Nerium.It typically occurs around dry stream beds. It grows to 2-6 m tall, with spreading to erect branches. The leaves are in pairs or whorls of three, thick and leathery, dark green, narrow lanceolate, 5-21 cm long and 1-3.5 cm broad, and with an entire margin. The flowers grow in clusters at the end of each branch; they are white, pink, red or yellow, 2.5-5 cm diameter, with a deeply 5-lobed corolla with a fringe round the central corolla tube. They are often, but not always, sweetly scented. The fruit is a long narrow capsule 5-23 cm long, which splits open at maturity to release numerous downy seeds.Oleander is one of the most poisonous plants and contains numerous toxic compounds like glycoside, of which can be deadly to people, especially young children.

The term biopesticide is often used for microbial biological control agents that are applied in a similar manner to chemical pesticides. Commonly these are microbial biological insecticides, but there are also examples of fungal control agents, including Trichoderma spp. and Ampelomyces quisqualis (a control agent for grape powdery mildew). Bacillus subtilis are used to control plant pathogens. Weeds and rodents have also been controlled with microbial agents.

Introduction
Plants have evolved for over 400 million years and to defend themselves from insect attack they have developed protection mechanisms such as repellents and even insecticidal effects. The oldest known pest control method is human sacrifice, but since it is not effective, or maybe because of the lack of volunteers, dusts began being used and also plant extracts which are mentioned even in the Bible. Massive use of these insecticides has had a long and difficult road because the earliest data gathering done by researchers among farmers and natives revealed a lot of practices based on superstition, which, when tested by scientific methods. were not shown to be effective. After the Second World War the few plant and plant extracts that had shown promising effects, and were of widespread use, were replaced by synthetic insecticides. When synthetic insecticides appeared in the 1940’s some people thought that botanical insecticides would disappear forever but problems like environmental contamination, residues in food and feed and pest resistance brought them back to the fore. There is no doubt botanical insecticides are an interesting alternative to insect pest control, and on the other hand only a few of the more than 250,000 plant species on our planet have been properly evaluated for this purpose. This means the potential for the future may be huge. In fact, plants like neem (Azadirachta indica J., Meliaceae), have shown excellent results and there already are commercial products in the market made from it. But one should not think success is at hand and botanical insecticides will replace all synthetic products. They are only alternatives that may be used in Integrated Pest Management programs and they should be used together with other available control measures.

Brief historical review
Use of plant extracts and powdered plant parts as insecticides goes back at least as far as the Roman Empire. For instance, there are reports that in 400 B.C. during Persian king Xerxes’ reign, the delousing procedure for children was with a powder obtained from the dry flowers of a plant known as pyrethrum (Tanacetum cinerariaefolium, Compositae). The first botanical insecticide, used as such, dates back to the XVII Century when it was shown that nicotine, obtained from tobacco leaves, would kill plum beetles. Around 1850 a new plant insecticide known as rotenone was introduced. It is obtained from the roots of plants called timbó. Up to that time this plant was used for fishing purposes only as natives had known for a long time that throwing root pieces to the water caused fish to start floating a few minutes later, making them very easy to catch. Later on plants with irritating properties like incense and sabadilla were used: extracts from the latter plant were used as decongestants. These plants did not kill insects directly but it was said that they “scared them off.” More recently other plants used are quasia (Quaisa amara, Simaroubaceae), neem or Margosa (A. indica) mentioned above, which besides giving excellent results for insect control are also a source of compounds used against cancer.

In México and several Central American countries even today it is common practice to treat pests with plants known for their insecticidal properties as far back as the era of the Aztecs and Mayans. A case in point is the use of a mixture of corn and beans with chili peppers (Capsicum frutescens; Solanaceae), rue (Ruta graveolens; Rutaceae) or garlic (Allium cepa; Alliaceae).

At the present time there are a number of botanical insecticides being marketed which are extracted from neem, grapefruit seeds and garlic, among other plants. Besides, there are the synthetic copies of natural active ingredients like neonicotinoids where imidacloprid stands out. Lastly, it is worth mentioning that this is a field where new discoveries are made every day. One example is the development of a new kind of insecticide obtained from the plant of Chilean Andes origin known as Calceolaria andina (Scrophulariaceae).

My autobiography

I am Dexter Jake M. Villarosa, rare and unique in the whole humankind with a heart that beats and a mind that speaks. I am a person so tired and worn out living for 13 years here on earth since June 17 at the one and only affable sanctuary of durians where dreams become reality and the pedestal of freedom popularly known as “Davao City”, specifically at Blk. 69 Lot 8 Rosalina III Village, Dumoy, Toril, studying at The University of the Immaculate Conception under the advisory of Mrs. Josefina Daleon in the most historic section of St. Catherine.
I believe that I was born out of love by my extravagant mother, Julieta M. Villarosa, and my valorous father, Elmer S. Villarosa, who cared for me in such a dramatic way, and helped me reach the chandelier of success. They are the ones who give me inspiration to go on starving for life and they make me feel special. Being with my family is really fun and enjoying and I love being with them.
I see myself as a good-looking person with a kind heart and a mind full of beautiful thoughts that help me go on to where I am now. An open system, I am a perennial learner and facer of reality. I am no escapist from responsibilities. I live a life full of dreams and reality because I’m a dreamer, a seer and inspirer of vision. I live my life free because I ooze life in exciting creativity in others. I live with virtues and do not do things which later on I may regret to have done it. Although I understand that every human is needed, I don’t look first at people but at situations and respond only to the beat of circumstance. I know that I am many of a person. I myself is a community that has to be built stronger every moment. Even though I may describe life as rough and hard, I know I should think and feel to a degree that I should do most out of what I can and give the best out of what I could afford.
I am merely friendly amongst my classmates. They make me popular even though I’m not supposed to be in the degree of fame. I am merry most of the time being with my friends and classmates. I share things and special talents with them like dancing, making scripts, doing assignments, acting, and joking in which later on they can spend time reminiscing.
I, being a cat-lover, my most anticipated cartoon character is the most famous cat ever, Garfield. He is so cute and chubby that I can eventually stare at him all day. I am a blue lover, because it makes my life visible to everybody who loves me; my being so bubbly, ‘coz the real me is bubbly. In terms of books, I love J.K Rowling’s book entitled “Harry Potter” including its movies because it is so magical and daring, but my favorite movie is Disney’s Ratatouille, because this movie is really an appreciable and adventurous one. A real rat cannot do such a chef’s job, but in the story, the rat can do such thing that amazes me. Talking about T.V. shows, I like Disney channel’s show namely “America’s Funniest Home Videos” because it is really very funny that I can burst out laughing. About games, I like playing badminton the most as it is very challenging and very recreational. Chitchatting about unusual trips and outings, I haven’t yet done one so far because I’m not a voyage-aholic, it makes me even more tired and worn out. I just love being in my home, cherishing moments with my family.
Blabbing about music, I love Mariah Carey because she is so classic, eventually more than classic, so influential, famous and fabulous. She has that one-of-a-kind voice that strikes everyone whoever hears it. She is so conversational and very satisfactory, so passionate and burning yet so shade. I really love music because it is like an antidote that gets all my fears away. For me, without music, life would be boring and lonely, ‘coz music saves my life, and music is my life.
You can be who you choose to be, but whatever you do or whether you don’t, you can’t still be me ‘coz I am who I am, and that’s something that you can never be, because all I want is for you to love me. Being the real me is not easy, and it’s the hardest thing for me to do, ever!
